Twelve-Step Programs

The first twelve-step program was developed by Alcoholics Anonymous around 80 years ago as a set of tools for recovery and living. Twelve-step programs rely on a group of spiritual principles and a belief that when people who have shared experiences fellowship with each other they can support each other in their recovery. Twelve-step programs and the principles behind them are the foundation for numerous recovery programs.

Rudolf H. Moos, PhD, and Christine Timko, PhD’s study on “Outcome Research on 12-Step and Other Self-Help Programs” found that seeking out self-help groups early in treatment increases the likelihood of remaining alcohol free for 1, 8, and 16 years, and the likelihood further increases as the weeks, months, and years of attendance increase.
